Liam has been having a hard week. Hes been retching and coughing causing him to be absolutely miserable. On monday I took him to his ped were we were told he probably hsd a cold. Everyday he contined to retch snd therefor vommit more and more. On friday I called his GIs office and they upped his dose of erythromicyn thinking it would help. Liam immediately got worse. He ended up retching and vommiting all night and continued after I stopped his feed. Usually he stops within a min of his feed being stopped. After I stopped the feed he became distressed and started desatting. I contacted his ped and was told to take him to Childrens hospital. I hooked up his oxygen, packed our bags and headed out for the hour drive. Thankfully when we got to ER, it was deserted. There was no waiting time. After only 5 hrs of waiting in the ER where they did xrays and gave him a continuos breathing treatment then admitted him. At that point, liams breathing and satting was perfect and he was off oxygen. Once in his room they started his feeds with pedialyte at 30mls per hr. Liam did retch but they gave him zofran. The plan was for him to be on pedialyte for 6hrs but he stayed on it for 17hrs. At 8am on sunday he was switched to half strength formula at tge same rate. Again he started retching and needed zofran regularly. He also started having stomach cramps. Turns out the dosage of erythromicyn they gave him was a higher dose not intended for slow motility so they lowered the dose. Unfortunatly the stomach pain stayed through the day and early evening. Finnaly we were able to increase his feeding rate to max 48mls per hr. Again that only lasted a few hrs before we had to decrease feeds again. No matter what we did he continued to retch. He is currently at max feeds since his tollerance is the same. He is vented to prevent anything from going into his lungs. We are waiting for the doc hoping he breaks down and tries something else. Before he said theyre job was only to get him well enough to go home and to let his GI deal with the real issue. This was said after he found out who liams GI was. I think he just doesnt want to step on the GIs toes because he works here too. I feel that if he doesnt try anything new today that were wasting out time and should be discharged so i can take liam to his ped or GI today. He doesnt seem to understand the importance of stopping the retching. When he retches he pukes and if hes not vented theres a high chance of liam aspirating and developing pneumonia. So its very important to get the retching under control. Liam has been doing his best to power through it all and play and smile between episodes. Please keep liam in your prayers. http://www.gofundme.com/zw8sc Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android |
This isn't a fairy tale. Our lives have been forever changed by Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. We're just trying to find a way to make it work.
